Product Description

In 1885, the Cutty Sark sailed from Sydney Australia to London in 73 days, setting a record and beating her old rival, the Thermopylae, in the process. She hoisted 32,000 square feet of sail and had a top speed of 17-1/2 knots.

Mantua's kit is designed from the original plans of the Cutty Sark, now restored and on display in Greenwich, England. Construction is double plank-on-bulkhead using limewood inner and walnut outer planking. All wooden parts are laser cut to facilitate assembly. Authentically detailed gilded metal ornaments grace her bow and stern. Solid brass yard collars and supports encircle the vessel, and individual copper plates cover the hull. Other fittings are copper, brass, cast metal and pre-finished hardwoods. Eight giant sheets of plans and an instruction booklet assure you of an accurate model.

INCLUDES COPPER SHEATHING!

For new or limited experience wood modelers, we strongly recommend the technique book Ship Modeling Simplified.

Please note: The manufacturer of this wood kit is based in Italy. Although complete plans and instructions are included, the limited English instructions provided require critical thinking and some modification as needed. This is not a build by numbers kit, and is not for everyone. Additional technique books, and or access to the advice of an experienced wood modeler or wood model club is recommended.

Mantua
Mantua Model, located in the ancient town Mantova, Italy, has built its reputation on the ultimate in large, elaborately detailed ship model kits. Designed for the experienced modeler, most use a combination of photo-etched brass and cast or machined bronze fittings. Several feature solid bronze ornamentation cast one piece at a time by the lost wax method. In addition to these magnificent models, Mantua also offers a wide variety of smaller, less intricate kits at very competitive prices.
